Release of Imran Khan: What forced the Pakistani government to talk to PTI leaders?
Is Pakistan softening its stance on jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan? Will he be released soon? These are the questions people were asking when Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi embraced PTI leader and Khan aide Ali Amin Gandapur, just three weeks after they fell into opposing camps during the fiery demonstrations in Islamabad. The images signal a move towards a long-awaited dialogue between the two warring camps.
The Pakistani government and opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) began talks on Monday, marking a step towards resolving several contentious issues, including the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Among the issues on the table is whether to try Imran in a military court. Although neither side has revealed the cards, Imran's release appears to be one of the main issues.
The first round of meetings was aimed at easing tensions between the rival camps, with the next set for January 2.
The start of the talks suggests that the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), led by Shahbaz Sharif and allegedly supported by the “military establishment”, may have finally given in to some of the PTI's demands. However, the long-awaited talks come amid growing international pressure.
Although domestic factors, such as current political instability and the need for a stable democratic process, likely motivated this initiative, voices within the international community, including human rights organizations , most likely played a role in favor of Khan's release.
TRUMP AID, KHALILZAD, BRANSON AMONG PEOPLE SEEKING RELEASE OF IMRAN KHAN
Calls from influential people around the world for the release of Imran Khan have increased in recent times.
From Richard Grenell, close ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, to British MP George Galloway, including former British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, all have called for the release of Imran Khan.
These calls attracted the attention of Khan's supporters in Pakistan and abroad.
“More and more global voices are rising for the release of Imran Khan, who is in arbitrary and politically motivated detention in false and fabricated cases. Influential voices around the world are saying: FREE IMRAN KHAN!” pseudo PTI published on X last week.
Humza Yousaf, the former Scottish First Minister, last week, speaking to the Oxford Union, said he was deeply troubled by Khan's “continued imprisonment”.
Zalmay Khalilzad, former US special representative for reconciliation in Afghanistan, expressed support for Khan's release on December 19, saying it was “time for change in Pakistan.”
“The Pakistani government deserves sanctions and diplomatic pressure because it has brutally used force against, and even massacred, peaceful protesters, and is using the law – the misuse of the legal system for political purposes – to maintain Imran Khan in jail,” Khalilzad told X.
Khalilzad, known for his close ties with Pakistan during Imran Khan's tenure as prime minister, had in November urged Pakistan's military establishment to explain Imran Khan's detention following Donald Trump's victory in the American presidential election.
Additionally, following Khan's ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith's impassioned plea in October for the PTI founder's release, several prominent figures from the UK and US have raised their voices in favor of release, according to a report by Dawn. They included British business magnate Richard Branson, philanthropist Jeffrey Skoll and American epidemiologist Lawrence Brilliant.
In September, at least 60 US lawmakers called on President Joe Biden to pressure Pakistan to release all political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan. This decision sparked strong criticism from Islamabad, which sees it as external interference.
In a letter to Biden, the lawmakers expressed concerns about the human rights situation in Pakistan.
UNITED NATIONS BODY AND AMNESTY ALSO CALL FOR RELEASE OF IMRAN KHAN
Voices calling for Khan's release have also been raised by multilateral organizations and rights bodies like the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and Amnesty International.
In an opinion published in July, the Working Group concluded that Khan's detention constituted a violation of international law. The group stressed that Khan's arrest had “no legal basis.”
In September, Amnesty called on Pakistani authorities to “immediately release Imran Khan from arbitrary pretrial detention.”
Imran Khan, qaidi number 804, currently detained in Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi, was initially arrested in May 2023 on charges that he and his wife, Bushra Bibi, received land worth Around $25 million as a bribe in 2018, while he was in power.
Khan was released on bail after three days in detention, during which his supporters staged violent protests, burning down army and state installations, killing eight people.
Khan now faces anti-terrorism charges linked to the unrest that followed his arrest in May.
Although Khan's party, the PTI, has consistently demanded his release, the government has shown little intention of taking action. It was both internal and global pressures that pushed the Pakistani establishment to sit at the negotiating table and discuss, among other things, the release of Imran Khan from prison.
