Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has condemned the £190 million corruption case against former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, the calling it “the worst example of political victimization.”

Speaking at a press conference in Peshawar on Monday, Akram warned that the public would not tolerate further injustices against the jailed ex-prime minister.

Akram's remarks follow the postponement of the verdict in the case, which was due today but was postponed to January 6 by an accountability court in Islamabad.

He expressed frustration at the delay, wondering why the verdict was postponed and what was causing such complications in delivering the judgment.

Akram questioned the delay in the verdict in the Al-Qadir Trust case, saying: “The decision in this case was supposed to be announced today, but it was postponed. We want to know where the judgment is written and why it is written. it takes so much time. There is nothing of substance in this matter, and yet it is being dragged out as a tool of political vengeance. »

The PTI leader said the case was politically motivated, terming it “political revenge”. He criticized the government for using the case to target Khan, whom he called Pakistan's “greatest leader”, and warned the situation would attract international attention.

He reiterated that the case was based on a “fabricated story” and claimed it was an attempt to pressure Khan into complying with the government's demands.

Akram defended the PTI founder, saying Khan was a mere trustee of the trust and the matter had no substance. The PTI continues to assert that the accusations against its leader are part of a broader campaign of political harassment by the ruling government.

He further raised concerns over the trials in military courts of those accused of the May 9 incidents, warning that such actions could harm the country's economy, stressing that civilian trials in military courts violate both the constitution of Pakistan and international laws.

Akram specifically highlighted the European Union's reaction to the military trials, pointing out that if former Prime Minister Imran Khan were found guilty in the Al-Qadir Trust case, it could jeopardize the status of the Generalized System of Preferences ( GSP+) of Pakistan with the EU.

The GSP+ agreement, which provides trade benefits to Pakistan, is the result of significant diplomatic efforts, and Akram stressed that any violation of international agreements would have a negative impact on Pakistan's exports and its relations with its global partners.

“The European Union has expressed concern over this decision. Civilian trials in military courts violate international agreements, including Article 14, which obliges Pakistan to ensure fair legal proceedings,” Akram said.

He accused the government of going to extreme lengths to suppress political opposition, even at the cost of violating international commitments.

He added that the PTI negotiation committee should be allowed to meet Imran Khan as it was established by him and has the authority to conduct negotiations on his behalf.

Responding to concerns over terrorism, Akram made it clear that the PTI should not be equated with extremist groups like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Al-Qaeda or the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He argued that civil trials in military courts should not apply to any political party, regardless of affiliation, and asserted that proceedings in military courts should be reserved for cases involving military personnel.

He clarified that the PTI has no connection with the internal military issues surrounding the court martial of General Faiz Hameed, terming it one that the army must resolve within its own ranks.
