RAWALPINDI: Jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on Tuesday asked the coalition government for a timetable regarding progress on their demands as the two sides formally began dialogues.
Speaking to reporters outside Rawalpindis Adiala Prison, following a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan, former ruling party president Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said declared Tuesday: There should be progress on our demands within the party. [a specified] period of time.
Dialogues should take place within [a specified] deadline, he said, citing the incarcerated PTI founder, who has been behind bars since August last year after being convicted in the Toshakhana case, one of dozens of cases registered against the former Prime Minister since his ouster from power in April 2022.
The development came a day after the ruling coalition and the PTI came together to defuse political tensions in the cash-strapped country. The negotiating committees, formed by the government and the PTI, conducted their high-profile meeting in a conducive environment and decided to continue the dialogue process.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who chaired the meeting, had said the next session would be held on January 2 and the PTI team would present a charter of its demands during the caucus.
While interacting with reporters today, the PTI chairman said that he had briefed Khan about their talks with the government. It was a routine meeting that lasted half an hour.
The PTI founder expressed satisfaction at initiating the negotiation process, he added.
Gohar expressed hope that the government would respond to their legitimate demands.
Replying to a question, the PTI chairman said issues related to the civil disobedience movement were not discussed in the meeting.
Earlier this month, the PTI founder warned the government against launching a “civil disobedience” movement if it demanded the release of political prisoners facing trial and the constitution of a judicial commission to to investigate the events of May 9, 2023 and a nighttime investigation. the repression against PTI demonstrators on November 26 was not respected.
If these two demands are not accepted, a civil disobedience movement will be launched from December 14, declared the imprisoned former Prime Minister. Later, at the request of PTI leaders, he differentiated the move to give a chance to talks.
Responding to a question, the PTI chairman said three members of their negotiating team, PTI MP Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza and Majlis Wehdat Senator Raja Nasir Abbas -i-Muslimeen (MWM) had attended yesterday's meeting.
It is pertinent to mention here that the top four PTI leaders General Secretary Salman Akram Raja, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan and Hamid Khan skipped the meeting, a decision that raised questions about the former ruling party's seriousness about the talks.
The PTI chief said he had already informed the speaker about the unavailability of the team members.
Dismissing the impression that PTI leaders were not willing to attend the meeting, he said KP CM could not attend the session due to cabinet meeting, Hamid was in Bangladesh and that Omar was to appear before the Peshawar High Court (PHC) in connection with his bail.
All members of the PTI negotiating team will attend the next round of negotiations, he added.
Ending the informal meeting of yesterday's session, the PTI leader said he would present his charter of demands before the government team in the next round of talks.
He also expressed hope for a breakthrough during the meeting with the coalition government.
“We hope that the negotiations with the government will prove fruitful.”
All the FIRs against Khan were politically motivated, the PTI chairman said, adding that the jailed ex-prime minister was granted bail in all the cases.
