Water security is the biggest challenge of the 21st century, says PM Modi | Morung Express
Khajuraho, December 25 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said water security was the biggest challenge of the 21st century, and also highlighted that several states were engaged in disputes over water sharing.
Prime Minister Modi said this at a public rally after laying the foundation stone of the country's first river link project – the Ken-Betwa project in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.
“One of the biggest challenges of the 21st century is water security. Only countries with sufficient water and good water management will be able to make progress,” PM Modi said.
Prime Minister Modi said that farms and fields will prosper only if there is water, and industries will prosper only if there is water. He said the last decade will go down in Indian history as an unprecedented decade in water security and conservation.
He said, “I come from Gujarat, where most parts were facing drought for most of the year, but the blessings of the Narmada river coming from Madhya Pradesh changed the fortunes of Gujarat.
The Prime Minister slammed the Congress for suppressing the truth about the man who first dreamed of Jal Shakti. “After the country got independence, the first thing that was done was Jal Shakti and who thought of that? …If the credit for the vision of India's water resources and the construction of dams goes to a great man, then the name of this great man is Babasaheb Ambedkar, but the Congress has never recognized him for his efforts,” he added.
He further said that in the past the Congress government was an expert in making announcements but people never got benefit from them.
“Since I became Prime Minister, I have noticed the old projects while analyzing the progress of programs and projects. I was surprised to see that the foundation stone was laid 35-40 years ago, but not a single inch of work was done later,” PM Modi said.
The Ken-Betwa River Linking Project introduced by PM Modi is expected to provide irrigation facilities to various districts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, benefiting thousands of farmer families.
PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of 1,153 Atal Gram Sushasan buildings and inaugurated the floating solar project established at Omkareshwar in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh.
It also released a commemorative stamp and coin marking the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
