In a significant move, Richard Grenell, US envoy for special missions by US President-elect Donald Trump, publicly supported the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan from prison, saying the regime current had created false allegations against him.

“I would like to see Imran Khan released from prison. He is currently in prison, facing many of the same allegations as President Trump, where the ruling party put him in prison and created some kind of corruption and false allegations, and he is in jail now,” Grenell was quoted as saying by ANI.

Grenell also drew parallels between the corruption charges Khan faces and those surrounding Trump, adding that both men have been victims of politically motivated allegations.

The US diplomat's comments came Wednesday during an interview with US media Newsmax, where he discussed US-Pakistan relations under the Trump administration.

Khan, who is also the founder and leader of the main opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is currently being held on corruption charges in a Pakistani prison.

Grenell also praised Khan for improving ties between the two nations, noting that relations had flourished when the PTI leader was in power. He highlighted Khan's background as a former cricket captain and outsider to mainstream politics, aligning him with Trump's status as a political outsider.

“We had much better relations with Pakistan under the Trump administration, when a man named Imran Khan was the leader of Pakistan. That's because Imran Khan was a foreigner. Earlier on Tuesday, Grenell, in response to US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller's post in X, demanded the release of the PTI founder.
