The transition from President Joe Biden's administration to that of President-elect Donald Trump could impact the federal prosecution of Luigi Mangione, legal analysts say.

Newsweek reached out to the Trump transition team and Mangione's lawyer for comment via email Wednesday morning.

Why it matters

Mangione, 26, allegedly shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as he walked outside a New York hotel on December 4. Federal prosecutors brought several charges against the defendant, including one carrying the death penalty.

Trump came out against Mangione and also promised this week to “vigorously” pursue death penalty cases when his Justice Department takes office next year. The remarks on the death penalty came after Biden commuted the sentences of all but three federal prisoners on death row.

In addition to the federal charges, Mangione faces six charges in New York State, carrying maximum sentences of one year to life in prison. He also faces relatively less serious charges in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested, for possession of a fraudulent identification document and possession of a firearm and silencer.

While many, like Trump, have condemned the actions of the accused shooter, many others have expressed support for Mangione and criticized the nation's health insurance industry. The accused's good looks also boosted his support, with some calling him a “sex symbol” online.

Protesters showed support for Mangione during his trial, many holding signs or wearing shirts denouncing the country's health problems. Although many said they did not support the violence, they also said they struggled to feel empathy for the wealthy insurance company CEO. They often cite the denial of health care requests, saying these decisions result in direct harm, even death, for large numbers of Americans.
