Doctor Who fans angry at 'woke' Christmas special after awkward Covid twist | Television and radio | Showbiz and television
Doctor Who viewers were left furious when the Christmas special made a number of references to the Covid pandemic in a confusing plot set in a hotel.
With Nicola Coughlan making a special appearance alongside new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, fans couldn't wait to see what was in store.
Instead, they were baffled by the number of impassioned monologues during the episode, particularly when Covid rules and lockdown parties were brought up in a dig at the Conservative government and Boris Johnson.
Joy, played by Coughlan, was left heartbroken when she told the Doctor that her mother had died on Christmas Day, adding in an emotional moment: “I had to say goodbye to her via an iPad because rules,” to which the Doctor sneered in response, “I bet you were good at obeying the rules.” It's funny and smiley, “I won't give you any trouble, little you.”
He continued, “It doesn't matter poor old mom, does she? As long as you're her good little girl obeying all the rules.”
Joy replied: “She died on Christmas Day,” adding that she “died on her own because of her periods,” before adding: “And all these horrible people with their wine fridges, their dances and their parties, and I listened for them, and I left my mother to die alone.
Joy's comments referred to backlash from Conservatives after the party admitted to socializing with each other when social distancing rules were put in place.
The impassioned speech was divisive, with many fans calling the Covid subplot “too dark” for Christmas Day.
One said: “Okay, you didn't expect this to be about Covid? as a second agreed: “The FFS doctor who went mega woke on Christmas Day.”
Another added: “Just casually watching a few minutes of Russell T Davies' latest Doctor Woke. What a load of c**p. Anyone who thinks this is great or amazing really needs to watch their immature head .”
A fourth said: “Playing COVID politics”, while a fifth raged: “Nothing says Christmas like a reminder of covid hospitals!” as a sixth agreed: “Oh I feel so festive now, being reminded that Covid was horrible and so many people died alone.”
But one of them said, “Oh my God, that #DoctorWho The Christmas special was MUCH BETTER THAN PAST YEARS – they did an amazing job this year, so good that I immediately can't wait to see it again.”
A second agreed: “It was actually so beautiful. I love Ncuti as the Doctor and Nicola Coughlan were amazing too.”
