“Free Imran Khan”: Donald Trump's new envoy, Richard Grenell, calls for the release of the former Pakistani prime minister

Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump's new special envoy, Richard Grenell, on Wednesday called for the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister and founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, detained on corruption charges in Pakistan .

In an interview with US newspaper Newsmax, Grenell discussed US-Pakistan relations during Trump's first term as president, noting that relations with Pakistan improved when Khan came to power.

According to Grenell, the former Pakistani prime minister was seen as an outsider and not a traditional politician, highlighting his ties to Donald Trump.

He pointed out that Khan faces allegations similar to those that led to former President Trump's imprisonment and called for his release, aligning his situation with that of President Trump.

“We had much better relations with Pakistan under the Trump administration, when a man named Imran Khan was the leader of Pakistan. That's because Imran Khan was a foreigner. He was a former cricketer and in made the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team He was not a politician and he spoke in very sensible language He and Donald Trump had a very good relationship,” Grenell said.

“I would like to see Imran Khan released from prison. He is currently in prison, facing many of the same allegations as President Trump, where the ruling party put him in prison and created some kind of corruption and false allegations, and he is in prison now,” he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Grenell, in response to US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller's post in X, called for the release of the PTI founder. He further criticized the State Department spokesperson by stating that the United States' concern over the “conviction of Pakistani civilians in a military tribunal” was overdue and that the efforts were too limited and too weak.
