Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a video message on Friday, described the death of Manmohan Singh as a “great loss” to the nation, saying his contribution to India will always be remembered.

The 92-year-old former prime minister died at AIIMS Delhi on Thursday evening after being admitted to the hospital in a critical condition.

After his death, the central government announced a seven-day national mourning.

Manmohan Singh, whose mortal remains have been kept at his residence for the public to pay their last respects, will have a funeral with full state honours.

In his message, Modi recalled Manmohan Singh's life journey after his family migrated to India after Partition, leaving everything behind in the process.

The Prime Minister said how he achieved heights in all aspects of life was not an easy task.

Manmohan Singh's life will always serve as a lesson to future generations, inspiring them on how to overcome deprivation and hardship to achieve success, Modi added.

I never forgot its roots

Modi said his predecessor would always be remembered as an honest human being, a scholar, an economist and a leader dedicated to reforms.

He also highlighted the former Prime Minister's role in the government in several capacities, from that of Governor of the Reserve Bank of India to that of Finance Minister under the PV Narasimha Rao-led government. Singh led India towards an iconic economic transformation.

As Prime Minister, his contribution to the development and progress of the country will always be remembered, Modi added.

Manmohan Singh's virtues were also praised by Modi, who said the late leader's honesty and simplicity were reflected in his life.

The Prime Minister added that despite being educated in the most prestigious institutions of the world and holding important positions in the country, the Congress leader never forgot his roots.

Modi noted that Singh's humility, sobriety and intellect defined the former prime minister's life as that of a respected parliamentarian. He recalled how Singh managed to come to Parliament in a wheelchair despite his health problems and frailty in recent years, praising his commitment to his duty as an MP.

Manmohan Singh was above partisan politics; it remains accessible to all, noted the Prime Minister.

Modi recalled his days as Gujarat Chief Minister (2004-2014) and said he often spoke to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on various national and international issues.

In fact, when Modi became prime minister in 2014, he said he would speak to his predecessor, adding that the two also had a conversation on Singh's birthday.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi condoled the death of one of India's “most eminent leaders”. “From modest origins, he became a respected economist,” he said in his X post.

“Manmohan Singh’s wisdom and humility was always on display,” Modi wrote.
