Imran resolute on PAC nomination

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has refused to initiate further consultations regarding the appointment as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

He asked party leaders to stop discussions on the issue and strongly reiterated his stance on the proposed candidate.

According to sources, Imran categorically supported Sheikh Waqas Akram as the party's presidential PAC candidate, leaving no room for alternative suggestions, while reprimanding the party leadership for trying to reconsider the nomination.

“I will decide who will be the chairman of the PTI PAC, not Shehbaz Sharif or any other government official. My first, second, third and fourth choice for the chairman of the PAC is Sheikh Waqas Akram,” Imran was quoted as saying in the meeting.

The controversy began when PML-N chief whip Tariq Fazal Chaudhry wrote to PTI chief whip Amir Dogar seeking a panel of four candidates for the PAC chairmanship. Tariq Fazal had already written two letters on July 1 and August 29 seeking names for the post.

The PTI, in its response to the first letter, named Sheikh Waqas Akram. However, the PML-N later requested a list of four candidates in its second communication.

Following consultations with the incarcerated party leader, the PTI leadership reaffirmed its sole nomination of Sheikh Waqas Akram in a letter dated September 19. “Our first, second, third and fourth candidates are Sheikh Waqas Akram,” the letter states.

The announcement came a day after party leaders met Imran Khan in Adiala jail.

During the meeting, party leaders briefed Imran about the correspondence from the NA President's office regarding the PAC chairmanship. In response, the PTI founder asserted, “PTI will appoint the PAC chairman, and neither Shehbaz Sharif nor government officials have the power to choose from our party.”

The PTI leadership has since launched consultations on Tariq Fazal Chaudhry's letter and plans to submit its final response next week.

Imran also hinted at his resignation from the chairmanship of other standing committees if the PAC chairmanship was not given to the party candidate.

Earlier, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, chief whip of the ruling party, had sent a third letter to PTI chief whip Amir Dogar, raising concerns over the prolonged delay in the appointment of the PAC chairman.

In the letter, Dr Tariq said the government wanted to conclude the process by next week and reiterated the ruling coalition's repeated demands for the opposition to put forward a panel of four candidates to facilitate the nomination.

Despite a 10-month delay, the government reaffirmed its commitment to respecting parliamentary standards by continuing to offer the PAC presidency to the opposition.

The letter also included a warning to the PTI, urging it to submit the requested panel within seven days. Dr Tariq warned that non-compliance would leave the government with no choice but to proceed unilaterally to finalize the appointment of the PAC chairman.
