PM Modi meets Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI
In an article on X, Srinivas said the two discussed the potential for AI adoption in India and globally.
The meeting with PM Modi took place just a week after the California-based startup closed a $500 million seed round at a staggering $9 billion valuation.
In February 2024, co-founder Srinivas said Perplexity AI plans to collaborate with Indian startups developing LLMs such as SarvamAI.
Co-founder and CEO of artificial intelligence (AI)-based search engine Perplexitys, Aravind Srinivas, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday (December 28).
In an article on X, Srinivas said the two discussed the potential for AI adoption in India and globally.

Srinivas also said he appreciated the time spent chatting with everyone in the Prime Minister's Office.
Founded by Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski, Perplexity launched its AI-powered search engine in December 2022. The company is backed by the likes of chipmaking giant Nvidia, founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos, Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), among others.
The meeting with PM Modi took place just a week after the California-based startup reportedly closed a $500 million seed round at a staggering $9 billion valuation, triple from the last fundraising round.
Although little is known about Perplexity's operations in India, Srinivas told a publication in February 2024 that the platform had over 1 million users in India. At the time, he also said that Perplexity AI planned to collaborate with Indian startups developing large language models (LLMs), such as SarvamAI.
Earlier in December, Srinivas also publicly stated that he was willing to find an economic structure with PM Modi to bring Perplexity Pro to Indian students, professors and researchers.
The meeting between PM Modi and Srinivas also comes at a time when the Indian government has gone all out to consolidate AI adoption in the country and foster GenAI startups.
Earlier this year, the union cabinet approved the INR 10,372 Cr IndiaAI Mission, which will seek to foster the local AI ecosystem, facilitate funding for emerging AI startups and drive innovation in the sector.
Earlier this month, the Center also opened the second round of tenders for its IndiaAI mission to establish computing capacity of up to 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), develop applications of AI for critical sectors and to meet the challenges identified by the government.
India is home to over 200 GenAI startups and these startups have raised over $1.2 billion in funding between 2020 and 2024. The local GenAI market is expected to become a $17 billion market opportunity by 2030.
