Jailed PKK leader hints ready to end insurgency and disarm

Jailed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan has reportedly signaled his willingness to call on militants to disarm, following pressure from a key ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling for an end to decades of the group. long insurrection.
Öcalan met two parliamentarians from the pro-Kurdish DEM party at his prison on Imrali Island on Saturday, marking the first of its kind in almost a decade. “I am ready to take (the) necessary positive step and make this call,” Öcalan was quoted as saying on Sunday. Bahceli's expanded proposal in October suggested that Öcalan could declare an end to the insurgency in exchange for possible release. Erdogan described the idea as a “historic window of opportunity” but stopped short of discussing any formal peace process.
Öcalan, who has been serving a life sentence since his capture 25 years ago, noted that recent events in Syria and Gaza have made resolving the Kurdish question “without delay.” He also called on opposition parties and Parliament to contribute to the process, hinting at possible legal reforms.
“I am also qualified and determined to make the necessary positive contribution to the new paradigm that Mr. Bahceli and Mr. Erdogan have established,” Öcalan added, according to the DEM statement.
Turkey urges US to end support for Syrian Kurdish militias
In this context, Turkey reiterated that the Kurdish YPG militia, which it considers an offshoot of the PKK, will play no role in Syria's future.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reiterated on Saturday in a phone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Ankara's opposition to the presence of Syrian Kurdish fighters supported by Washington, stressing that they ” cannot be allowed to take refuge in Syria.
A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Fidan was specifically referring to the People's Protection Units (YPG), the main force of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Ankara considers the YPG to be a Syrian affiliate of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group that Turkiye has designated a terrorist organization.
Turkey has long criticized the United States for its partnership with the SDF in northern Syria, while Washington says Kurdish-led forces are key to preventing the resurgence of ISIS. The United States credits the SDF with allegedly playing a central role in defeating ISIS militants in 2019.
