Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised grandmaster Koneru Humpy after she won the title of FIDE women's rapid chess world champion. Humpy won the title in New York after completing a remarkable comeback. The odds were against the Indian grandmaster. However, she was very determined to return on the second day. She then wrapped up the proceedings by rising to the top on the third day.
Modi said Koneru Humpy's genius and courage continues to inspire millions and this victory is “historic”.
2024 turned out to be a historic year for India in the field of chess. A few days ago, Gukesh Dommaraju was crowned world chess champion after defeating China's Ding Liren.
Speaking to is even more historic as it is her second World Rapid Championship title, thus making her the only Indian to achieve this incredible feat.

This is the second time Koneru Humpy has won the title. She had already launched the competition in 2019.
After winning the competition, Koneru Humpy said: “I am very happy and excited because this is my second rapid world title. I also won in 2019.”
Koneru Humpy made headlines after becoming the youngest woman to win the Grandmaster title in 2002. She achieved this feat at the age of 15 years, 1 month and 27 days. This record was finally surpassed by the Chinese Hou Yifan. Koneru Humpy is also India's first female grandmaster.
Humpy is also a gold medalist in the Olympiads, Asian Games and Asian Championships. She is the current women's rapid chess world champion.
In 2006, Humpy became the second chess player, after Susan Polgar, to exceed the 2,600 Elo mark.
