Reporter allegedly attacked by man saying this is Trump's America now | Colorado

A Colorado man attacked a television reporter by asking if he was a citizen and telling him this was life in the United States in the run-up to Donald Trump's second presidency, according to criminal court documents.

The man, Patrick Thomas Egan, was arrested Dec. 18 in Grand Junction on suspicion of bias crimes, second-degree assault and harassment.

Egan is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 2 to see if formal charges have been filed.

Police say Egan, 39, followed the car of KKCO/KJCT reporter JaRonn Alex, who later told police he thought he was targeted because he was from the Pacific Islands.

An arrest affidavit in the case said Egan arrived in a taxi, stopped next to Alex who was on a mission at the time at a red light and asked him: Are you even a American citizen? It's Trump's America now! I'm a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you!

The affidavit described Egan as tackling Alex and putting him in a headlock before Egan began strangling him, causing his co-workers to run and help him.

According to the documents, witnesses said Alex appeared to be having trouble breathing during the attack, which was caught on surveillance video, the Associated Press reported.

Although the alleged assault appears isolated, a political environment hostile to the media has seen Trump label them as enemies of the people, a threat to democracy, fake and crooked bastards. He deployed such rhetoric during his first presidency from 2017 to 2021 and as he successfully sought to return to the White House in the November election.

The Press Freedom Foundation said in November it had recorded 75 attacks on journalists since January 1 of this year, an increase of 70% compared to 2023.

A recent survey of journalists undergoing safety training by the International Women's Media Foundation found that 36% of respondents reported being threatened or experienced physical violence and 28% reported legal threats or measures legal action against them.

Yet nearly a quarter (23%) of Americans surveyed do not view political attacks on journalists or news organizations as a threat to press freedom. Of those, 38% identified as Republicans, compared to just 9% as Democrats, City University of London reported.

The findings coincide with a separate poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, which found that most American adults are tired of the news industry's political coverage.
