'Raymond was a legend' – Tribute to the tailor who served Bradford for over 50 years

A BRADFORD businessman has paid tribute to a fellow Bradford tailor following his death.

Ray Lister, who worked as a tailor in the town for over 50 years, sadly passed away on Saturday morning.

Mr Lister started his tailoring business in the store which is now called IK Collections in the 1960s.

It came full circle in 2021 when, aged 82, Mr Lister swapped his retirement to make suits with owner Imran Khan at the Westgate site.

Mr Khan described his friend as an “incredible mentor” who was such a funny and entertaining character.

Imran Khan and Mr Lister were great friends (Image: UGC) Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus, he said: “He showed me how to cut jackets and find the right balance so the suit fit the customer well .

“He was a great mentor, not just to me, but he gave all his expertise to the young tailors who were coming. That was the most important thing.

“He said ‘you’re more than a son to me’. It’s so upsetting, we were all heartbroken.”

After leaving school, doing national service and working in Leeds and Nottingham, Mr Lister moved to Bradford to open his own tailoring business which he operated for more than half a century.

Mr Lister worked as a tailor before retiring. Mr Khan added: “He lit up the building when he came in. He was such a funny character.

“He had a beautiful voice. He sang Frank Sinatra's 'Come Fly with Me' in the store. I really miss him.

“He was entertaining and really nice to the rest of the staff. He made everyone laugh.

“Raymond was a legend. All the apprentices he trained were in touch.

“We will do something in his name to remember his legacy in 2025.”

He loved his job When he came out of retirement in 2021, Mr Lister said: “I love coming in and talking to customers, many of them are old friends.

“I do a little cutting and a little sewing.

“I retired about 10 years ago, I kept in touch with Imran and three years ago he asked me if I wanted to come over sometime.

“I think we make suits as good as Savile Row in London, if not better.

“I don't have any hobbies. I was just bored at home. I was fed up. I never particularly enjoyed retirement.”
