Xi Jinping once again announces the reunification of Taiwan with China
“People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. No one can sever our family ties, and no one can stop the historic trend of national reunification,” Xi said in his New Year speech.
The agency recalled that in his New Year's speech last year, Xi said China's reunification with Taiwan was inevitable. He added that people on both sides should be united by a common goal and share the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
China-Taiwan confrontation
China considers democratically governed Taiwan to be part of its territory. However, Taipei rejects Beijing's claims and says only its people can decide its future and that China must respect the choice of the Taiwanese people.
Tensions in the sensitive Taiwan Strait have remained high throughout 2024, particularly after Lai Ching-te became the island's new president in May, someone Beijing views as a separatist.
Earlier this month, China carried out a major build-up of its naval forces around Taiwan as well as in the East and South China Seas. The maneuvers came after Lai made stops in Hawaii and the U.S. territory of Guam during a Pacific trip, which was heavily criticized by Beijing.
China, which has never ruled out the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, conducted two rounds of military exercises around the island last year. Beijing said the exercises were a warning against separatist acts and promised to take additional measures if necessary.
Xi Jinping has repeatedly said he views Taiwan as an inseparable part of China and expressed his intention to reunite the island with the People's Republic of China. He was most aggressive in his attempts to conquer and annex Taiwan by military means.
Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te confirmed that China regards the annexation and elimination of Taiwan's independence as a major national cause.
