GILGIT: An anti-terrorism court on Tuesday sentenced PTI leader and former Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister Khalid Khurshid Khan to 34 years in prison and Rs 600,000 fine for threatening security institutions during a rally audience.

His disqualification led several PTI lawmakers to switch sides and eventually a coalition government emerged in Britain with a disgruntled PTI member, Haji Gulbar Khan, becoming the new chief minister.

In August 2023, police filed a case against Mr Khan for allegedly possessing a fake law degree and the Electoral Commission of Britain also disqualified him from the post of PTI chairman.

He was also convicted for clashes with police in Lahore and Islamabad and for using government machinery to support PTI protests.

He was also named in FIRs registered for allegedly using Gilgit-Baltistan Police and other resources to protect Imran Khan from possible arrest in Lahore in March 2023.

The action came after the federal government gathered all the evidence pointing to the use of British police forces and resources for the security of Imran Khan.

In September this year, the Peshawar High Court granted him bail in cases registered against him in different parts of the country.
