Roberts warns against ignoring Supreme Court rulings as tensions with Trump loom

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts criticized what he called dangerous rhetoric from some officials about ignoring Federal Court rulings, using an annual report weeks before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration to highlight the importance of an independent judiciary.

Officials across the political spectrum have raised the specter of open defiance of the federal court's rulings, Roberts wrote in the Supreme Court's report released Tuesday. These dangerous suggestions, however sporadic, must be categorically rejected.

Roberts, in particular, pointed to decisions by the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations to implement school desegregation decisions. In 1957, for example, President Dwight Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock to integrate its schools after officials sought to defy Supreme Court rulings declaring segregated schools unconstitutional.

Roberts lamented that officials, whom he also did not name, unfortunately attempted to intimidate the justices by suggesting political bias in the justices' unfavorable rulings, without credible basis for such allegations.
