China and Taiwan: Xi says no one can stop “reunification”
No one can stop China's “reunification” with Taiwan, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his New Year speech on Tuesday, issuing a clear warning to what Beijing sees as pro-independence forces within and outside the island of 23 million people.
Over the past year, Beijing has stepped up its military pressure near Taiwan, sending warships and aircraft almost daily into the waters and airspace around the island, which Taiwanese officials view as a creeping effort to “normalize” China’s military presence.
China considers Taiwan, a democratically governed country, to be its own territory. But the Taiwanese government rejects Beijing's claims and says that only its people can decide its future and that Beijing must respect the choice of the Taiwanese people.
“People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. No one can sever our family ties, and no one can stop the historic trend of national reunification,” Xi said in a televised speech on Taiwan Channel. Chinese public television CCTV.
In his New Year speech last year, Xi said China's “reunification” with Taiwan was inevitable and that people on both sides “should be bound by a common purpose and share the glory of the nation's rejuvenation Chinese”.
Tensions remained high throughout the year in the sensitive Taiwan Strait, particularly after Lai Ching-te, considered a “separatist” by Beijing, became the island's latest president in May.
Earlier this month, China staged a major buildup of naval forces around Taiwan and in the East and South China Seas after Lai made stops in Hawaii and the U.S. territory of Guam during a trip to the Pacific criticized by Beijing.
China, which has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, conducted two rounds of war exercises around the island this year, claiming they were training exercises. guards against “separatist acts” and pledged to take further action if necessary.
