Claim: Donald Trump said: “I learned a lot from Imran Khan, his Islamic style and his independent politics. He is not only the leader of Pakistanis but he is also my leader.

Fact: Trump never made such remarks.

On November 11, 2024, the Facebook page published (archive) a reel with the following caption:

*_ _*[Ive learnt a lot from Imran Khan, his Islamic style, and his independent policy. He is not only the leader of Pakistanis but he is also my leader, [said] Donald Trump.]

This claim surfaced after Trump won (archive) the race to become the 47th president of the United States, earning the 270 electoral votes required to enter the Oval Office. Biden's term officially ends at noon ET (archives) on January 20, 2025.

Khan has been incarcerated since August 5, 2023 on various charges, but he has either been acquitted or granted bail in some cases; the sentence for one of them was suspended (archived respectively here, here, here, here and here). However, he was indicted in a case of inciting attacks against the Pakistani army in 2023 and arrest warrants were issued for Bushra Bibi, his wife, released in October after almost nine months of imprisonment.

On December 26, 2024, a military court convicted 60 of the prime minister's former supporters for their involvement in the May 2023 riots, just days after convicting 25 others for similar offenses.

Fact or fiction?

Soch Fact Check searched for reports of such remarks made by Trump by reputable media outlets, but found none.

We then looked through the transcripts available on the archived Trump White House website regarding his interactions with Khan during his presidency.

The two leaders have met at least three times: twice at the White House in July and September 2019 and once in January 2022 in Davos, Switzerland. However, in none of these interactions did Trump make such remarks about Khan, only saying that the then Pakistani Prime Minister was a great leader, my friend, a good man, a kind man, a great athlete and a very good friend of mine. .

Then, at a November 2023 campaign rally in Houston, Trump spoke about Khan, as well as the latter's response to the 2020 assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani. In this speech also, he said that the Pakistani politician was a great cricketer, the greatest cricketer and the most handsome guy who became the boss of Pakistan.

The reel visuals are from September 11, 2024, when Trump attended the 9/11 memorial service and was criticized by some for pointing, giving thumbs up, winking and blowing kisses during 'a dark event. The clip was also used by his campaign in a Snapchat ad. We discovered this after first discovering these videos on September 13-14, 2024, and then using keyword searches to locate the original footage.

Trump's actions were also captured by photographers, whose photos are available here, here, here and here on Getty Images. We also came across the same video posted by photographer Stephen Tierney, who included the hashtag #original in his TikTok and Instagram posts, which have been viewed 38.9 million and 720,000 times, respectively.
