Imran rejects ISPR statement on TTP talks

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has rejected the statements of Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), reiterating that negotiations with the Taliban were a strategy dreamed up by the former leader of Army Qamar Javed Bajwa.

This was stated by lawyer Faisal Chaudhry, who briefed the media outside Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. A six-member legal team had already met the former prime minister.

He said, “Imran Khan's position is clear: the accusations against him and the PTI leadership are politically motivated and lack substance. These trials are a means of political targeting, not justice.

He further noted that Khan had reiterated his call for a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents and the November 26 protests. “Our leader seeks justice, not leniency, and has set January 31 as the deadline to assess the seriousness of the dialogue with the government,” he added.

Referring to negotiations with the Taliban, Chaudhry quoted Khan as saying: “ISPR's position is incorrect. General Bajwa strategized the establishment's relationship with the Taliban. Afghanistan's problems can only be resolved through dialogue, which remains a practical solution.”

Khan also criticized diplomatic efforts and simultaneous aerial bombardments, calling for a coherent approach. He criticized the trials in military courts, calling the convictions controversial. “These trials lack transparency and justice. The Constitution must be respected and human rights must be protected,” he said.

The PTI team intends to participate in the talks on January 2 and remains committed to tackling issues such as electoral mandates and constitutional amendments. “The nation is suffering economically due to political unrest and mismanagement,” Chaudhry concluded.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Monday formally convened a closed-door meeting of the committees representing the government and the embattled PTI on January 2, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the NA president, the crucial meeting between the ruling alliance and the party founded by Imran Khan will be held at Parliament on Thursday. The key meeting will begin at 11 a.m., he added. The next meeting is a continuation of the meeting of December 23.
