OCCRP's publication regarding Jokowi considered slanderous and insults national sovereignty

JAKARTA, investor.id – Academician and jurist Albert Aries believes that the publication of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which named the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, as a finalist for organized crime figures and of corruption in 2024, could be described as slander.

According to Albert, the publication of the OCCRP could even be called an insult to the sovereignty of the Indonesian nation.

He said that the appointment of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia as a figure of organized crime and corruption in 2024 without sufficient preliminary evidence is a crime of defamation that harms the reputation of others.

“The publication of the OCCRP clearly contradicts Article 19 paragraph (3) of the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which Indonesia ratified through Law Number 12 of 2005,” Albert told the journalists Wednesday (1/1/2025).

Albert stressed that accusations of corruption without legal basis and not accompanied by sufficient preliminary evidence were clearly directed not only against Jokowi, but also against the Indonesian government. According to him, the publication of the OCCRP is a form of trial carried out by NGOs or trial by NGOs.

“During the 10 years of Jokowi's government, it was certainly full of shortcomings, but Jokowi nevertheless inherited many good things,” he stressed.

Albert viewed this as OCCRP assuming the constitutional role of the DPR in carrying out its function of supervising the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia. This was never proposed by the DPR, let alone proven to violate the law under Article 7A of the 1945 Constitution.

“We remind foreign NGOs, within the framework of democracy, to continue to respect Indonesia's sovereignty and return to the principles of international law, Omnis indemnatus pro innoxio legibus habetur or anyone who has never been proven guilty by a fair trial, must be considered legally innocent,” Albert concluded.
