Second round of talks between Imran Khan's PTI and government to be held today

Islamabad: The government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will begin a second round of dialogue on Thursday (today) afternoon, The News reported.

The closed-door meeting of the government and PTI negotiating committees was postponed from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm today. According to the spokesperson for the National Assembly, the members of the committee asked to change the meeting schedule.

The meeting will be chaired by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, in the constitutional committee room of Parliament. As president of NA, he facilitates and leads negotiations between the government and the PTI.

The opposition party has decided to demand the government to release PTI prisoners and investigate cases related to the May 9 and November 26 protests through the constitution of a judicial commission.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Wednesday said the PTI was ready to launch a protest movement if the ongoing talks with the government failed.

Speaking to a private news channel, he said that the PTI founder had authorized the party leadership to hold negotiations with the government only for the good of the country.

The chief minister, who is also the head of the KP wing of the PTI, said that although his party had initiated talks with the government, he was ready to launch a movement if its demands were not met.

Listing the main demands, referring to the PTI's charter of demands, he said they included the release of the PTI founder, other leaders and political prisoners.

The chief minister also reiterated his earlier call for the formation of a commission to probe the violent incidents of May 9 and November 26. He expressed hope that the year 2025 would mark the beginning of what he called true freedom.

Gandapur stressed that the PTI was counting on public support to launch the movement, saying support from foreign powers was not necessary.

Meanwhile, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui on Wednesday said the government would hold consultations with coalition partners regarding the PTI's Charter of Demands (CoD), after receiving the party's demands.

Speaking to a local TV channel, Siddiqui said his party may seek legal help on the PTI CoD issue.

Responding to a question regarding the May 9 and November 26 judicial commissions, he said the government would seek legal assistance on the issues that arose during those protests.

“Homework will also be completed before taking decisions and considering the demands of PTI leaders,” he said.

*'This practice must be stopped'*

On the other hand, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif urged PTI leaders to work for national interest and avoid attacking the country's security institutions in future.

“The PTI was involved in the May 9 riots and this practice must stop in future,” he told a TV channel.

To a question on dialogue with the opposition, he said the government had started a process of dialogue with the PTI in the larger national interest.

“Despite the political instability created by the PTI leadership since 2018, we have managed to reduce inflation,” the minister added.

There must be political stability in the country for the government to achieve its economic and export goals appropriately, Asif said.
