Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding president Imran Khan has given a strong directive to his party to avoid compromise on the issue of prisoner release ahead of talks with the government.

Imran's message came during a meeting with two members of the PTI negotiating committee – lawyer Ali Zafar and Suleman Akram Raja – at Adiala prison in Rawalpindi, Express News reported.

The meeting, held ahead of the second round of talks scheduled later in the day, was a crucial discussion to finalize the PTI's strategy.

Suleman Akram Raja, who briefly addressed the media after the meeting, reiterated the party's position. “We remain firm in our position and remain hopeful about the success of the negotiations,” he said.

After the meeting, the two committee members left the prison to prepare for the next round of negotiations.

Imran Khan's clear instruction to the commission was not to bow to any pressure regarding the release of prisoners, a key sticking point in the ongoing political dialogue.

This next round of negotiations should be crucial.

The first round of talks, which took place on December 23, concluded with both sides agreeing to continue discussions. Today's meeting will follow this initial agreement, where the government committee will re-engage with PTI representatives to try to reach a resolution.

The government team is led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and includes key figures such as Senator Irfan Siddiqui, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, among others.

The PTI negotiating committee is headed by former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and includes party leaders such as Ejaz Chaudhry, Hamid Raza and Raja Nasser Abbas.

Earlier in the day, mercy petitions filed by 19 people convicted for their involvement in the May 9 protests were approved, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Thursday.

“Following the promulgation of the sentences imposed on the convicts for the May 9 tragedy, they exercised their right to appeal and requested pardon/remission of their sentences,” the military's media wing said.

The ISPR further said that a total of 67 convicts had submitted mercy petitions, of which 48 were taken to the appellate courts. He added that the requests of 19 convicts had been accepted “for purely humanitarian reasons, in accordance with the law.”

“They will all be released after the completion of procedural formalities,” the statement continued.

The press release also mentions that the requests for pardon of the other convicts will be decided in due time, following the legal proceedings. He stressed that all those found guilty retained their right to appeal and pursue other legal remedies in accordance with the law and the Constitution.

In December, military courts sentenced 60 additional civilians to prison terms for their roles in violent attacks on military installations during the May 9, 2023 nationwide riots.

The convictions come just days after the ISPR announced that 25 civilians had been sentenced to prison terms for their involvement in the same events.

The individuals were convicted for their involvement in violent attacks on key military and government installations, including the Corps Commander's House in Lahore, the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, the ISI office in Faisalabad and Bannu Cantt, among others, the ISPR. declared.
