The Pakistan Army said on Thursday (January 2, 2025) that it had accepted the pardon requests of 19 convicts involved in the attacks on military installations on May 9, 2023.

On May 9, 2023, supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party reportedly attacked several military installations, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad, to express their anger against the arrest of their party founder in Faisalabad. a case of corruption.

Hundreds of suspects were arrested during this nationwide operation. The cases of more than 100 civilians were referred to the military court for trial because they were involved in the attack on military installations.

In December, military courts sentenced 85 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to 10 years for their roles in the violence.

According to a press release published Thursday January 2, 2024, following the promulgation of the sentences imposed on those convicted of the tragedy of May 9, they exercised their right to appeal and requested pardon and remission of their sentences.

He indicated that 67 convicts had filed their request for pardon, adding that 48 requests had been processed before the courts of appeal, while the requests of 19 convicts had been accepted for purely humanitarian reasons, in accordance with the law.

He further stated that the requests for pardon of the other convicts will be decided in due course, following the conclusion of the legal proceedings.

The reduced sentences demonstrate the strength of due process and fairness, which ensures that justice is done while also taking into account the principles of compassion and mercy, he said.

The military said all those whose appeals for clemency were accepted would be released once procedural formalities were completed.

He also said that all those found guilty retain the right to appeal and other legal remedies in accordance with the law and the constitution.

This is the second group of people involved in the released attacks. At the beginning of April 2024, the release of 20 convicts was also carried out for humanitarian reasons, in accordance with the law.
