ISLAMABAD: In the second round of talks between the PTI and the government, the PTI decided to present its charter of demands after consulting Imran Khan. After the PTI sought time for consultations with Imran, it was decided that the third round of talks would be held next week and the time and date of which will be determined.
The second round of closed-door talks was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in Parliament, during which the government party was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Rana Sanaullah , Irfan Siddiqui, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Syed Naveed Qamar, Farooq Sattar, Ijazul Haq and Khalid Hussain Magsi. The opposition committee included Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Salman Akram Raja, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Asad Qaisar, Omar Ayub and Raja Nasir Abbas.
After the meeting, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the opposition would present a charter of demands. PTI leaders have mentioned the demands but need more time to consult Imran Khan. He said the third round of negotiations would take place next week. He indicated that the discussions took place in a pleasant atmosphere.
Sadiq said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur made good suggestions and spoke openly. Everyone decided to speak for the good of Pakistan. Earlier, during the meeting, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said: We are all Pakistanis, the welfare of our people is our responsibility, negotiations will reduce bitterness and improve the environment. I hope that the parties will conduct the negotiations in a positive manner.
The speaker said he was trying to bring other important issues, including terrorism, the economy, etc., to the attention of this committee.
Reading out the joint statement after the meeting, PMLN leader and Negotiating Committee spokesperson Senator Irfan Siddiqui said the next round of talks would be held after a week as the opposition demanded time for consultations and advice with the founder of the PTI. He said the negotiations took place in a favorable environment and it is hoped that the PTI will present its charter of demands in black and white in the next session. He said it was decided that the time of the third meeting would be determined next week after the PTI committee meets Imran Khan.
Irfan Siddiqui told the media that PTI leaders demanded the formation of a judicial commission. We expected the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to present written points in light of which negotiations could take place, he said. Siddiqui said the PTI had requested facilitation to meet Imran Khan and wanted to follow the founder's advice for this process. We have no objection to PTI leaders meeting Imran Khan and seeking facilitation. The PTI has demanded one more week, after which the third round of negotiations will take place next week. If the opposition's demands come to us in written form, we will see what they want, he said.
The senator said PTI leaders talked about democratic stability. The tone of the oppositions is not harsh and many things were appreciated by them. The negotiations taking place in a pleasant atmosphere are also a positive development, he said. He said that before the negotiations, they decided that all statements and events outside the meeting would not be taken into account. Whatever the sentence handed down by the Al-Qadir Trust on January 9, there will be no obstacles on our part to continue negotiations based on this result, he said.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said that since the government's behavior seems inclined to achieve a solution to the problems, it is obvious that all this is happening with the will of the establishment.
Concerning the remission of sentences to the 19 accused of the May 9 incidents, the CM of KP welcomed this development. These issues were supposed to be resolved once and for all in Pakistan and I think today is that day, he said. Gandapur said the issues should be resolved democratically and politically. Imran Khan has given his blessing to these negotiations and he will decide what to do and how.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said they expected the PTI to present its demands in writing today so that the negotiation process could move forward. Dar said they had no objection to the PTI committee coming up with its charter of demands after seeking advice from Imran Khan, so that both committees could move forward on the issue amicably.
The talks will succeed only when there is justice for all, PTI general secretary Salman Akram Raja said in an interview with a private news channel on Tuesday.
He reiterated PTI's demands to release political prisoners, including Imran, and constitute a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9, 2023 and the November 26 crackdown on PTI protesters. If these demands are not met… then we will develop a future action plan, he added.
In response to a question, Raja noted that January 31 was the deadline for negotiations and after this date his party would work out the next course of action.
Meanwhile, Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah welcomed the positive statements of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Raja during today's meeting.
The PTI committee wanted to seek advice from its founder, he said while speaking on Geo News show Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath, noting that the government team had not put down any conditions for the negotiations .
Referring to the PTI's demand to release the PTI founder, Sanaullah said he would question the former ruling party on how such a demand can be made.
Replying to a question, the PML-N leader said the establishment neither asked his party to hold negotiations nor prevented them. Even the ISPR DG said that political parties should talk to each other, he added.
Further, he rejected the idea of the government proposing to release the imprisoned Imran, saying no one had made a statement on releasing the PTI founder within 15 days.
