Amir Muqam slams Imran's 'self-centered' politics as govt-PTI continues talks next week – Pakistan

Federal Minister for Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir Affairs and Border States and Areas Amir Muqam on Friday sharply criticized PTI founder Imran Khan, saying he is prioritizing self-defense over interests of the country, questioning its commitment to the well-being of the nation.

Since Imran's incarceration in several cases last year, the PTI's relations with the government and the establishment have deteriorated sharply, marked by protests that often degenerated into violence amid state repression.

Following the unrest, Imran set up a five-member committee to hold talks with anyone, signaling a change in stance of PTI lawmakers in parliament. In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also formed a committee comprising members of the ruling coalition.

The first meeting between the two sides took place on December 23, while the second took place yesterday (January 2). So far, both sides have not made significant progress as PTI leaders sought to meet Imran frequently to finalize their list of demands. The government and opposition will meet again, perhaps next week.

In an exclusive interview with a private news channel, Muqam urged the PTI to engage in dialogue with the government to resolve pressing economic issues and work for the betterment of the country, rather than pursuing self-centered politics.

The PTI has clearly expressed its main demands: the creation of a judicial commission responsible for investigating the violence of May 9 and November 26 and the release of political prisoners, including Imran.

Responding to a question, Muqam clarified that the government's negotiating committee does not have the power to decide on Imran's release.

He added that the decision will be made by the courts, stressing the importance of respecting the rule of law and allowing the judicial process to take its course.

Muqam encouraged the PTI to take the legal route, allowing the courts to determine Imran's fate.

He also urged the PTI to seize the negotiation opportunity and make the roundtable a success, saying: “This approach can only lead to a mutually beneficial outcome, where both sides find common ground and work together to resolve pressing issues.
