Buoyed by drones and NATO deals, Turkey's defense exports hit record $7.1 billion
ANKARA Turkey's defense industry exports exceeded $7.1 billion last year, the head of Turkey's Defense Industry Agency (SSB) announced on Friday, marking a significant milestone.
In 2024, our defense and aviation industry exports, including those of NATO and services, reached a new record by increasing by 29%, reaching $7.154 billion, the president wrote of the SSB, Haluk Gorgun, on X.
This figure exceeds Turkey's defense export target of $6.5 billion for 2024.
Gorgun also noted that Turkey exports defense products to 180 countries, but did not provide further details.
Turkey is set to further increase its defense exports. A major international arms fair in October resulted in export deals totaling $4.6 billion.
Spain, Turkey's NATO ally, has agreed to purchase 24 Hurjet trainer aircraft, produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS), under a memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in December.
The same month, Turkish state-owned Defense Technologies Engineering Corporation signed an agreement with the Portuguese Navy to build two supply ships.
The deals mark the first exports of Turkish jets and manned military ships to Turkey's NATO allies.
In 2023, Turkish defense exports amounted to $5.5 billion, according to data from the Turkish Presidency's Directorate of Defense Industries.
Turkey's top exporters of defense products include TUSAS and Aselsan, the country's leading defense electronics company, as well as Baykar, which is owned by the family of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's youngest son-in-law, Selcuk Bayraktar.
The combined revenues, including exports, of these three companies exceeded $6 billion in 2024, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
In late December, Baykar made headlines by acquiring Italian aviation company Piaggio Aerospace, as Turkey's presence in the European defense market grew.
Baykar, the world's largest UCAV company, has outbid rivals from several countries in a tender for the sale of Piaggio Aerospace, the company said in a statement.
