Controversial OCCRP Award: No Direct Evidence Against Joko Widodo on Corruption Issues
ototmaluku.id – The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) recently announced Bashar al-Assad as the recipient of the 2024 “Person of the Year” award.
The awards are designed to recognize those considered to have contributed the most to corruption and organized crime, which undermine democracy and human rights around the world. During the selection process, the name Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, also received attention among the nominees.
As has been tradition for the past 13 years, OCCRP determined the winners through a jury composed of civil society experts, academics and journalists with extensive experience in crime investigations and corruption.
As noted on the OCCRP website, on Thursday, January 2, 2025, this process began with an open call for applications, which this year received more than 55,000 proposals from various parts of the world.
Jokowi on candidate list
According to OCCRP, Jokowi's name was among the candidates who received great support from the public online.
However, OCCRP explains that it has no control over who is nominated, as nominations come directly from the global public. This assessment placed Jokowi among the finalists based on his online popularity and relevance to the theme of the award.
According to OCCRP, there is no direct evidence to suggest that Jokowi was involved in corruption for personal gain during his time in office.
However, a number of civil society groups and experts believe his government has significantly weakened Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Jokowi has also drawn widespread criticism for allegedly weakening electoral and judicial institutions to support his family's political ambitions, including his son's vice presidential post under President Prabowo Subianto's new government.
Public perception and OCCRP response
OCCRP Editor Drew Sullivan emphasized that this award was not based solely on direct evidence, but also took into account public perception.
Public perception of corruption is an important signal to leaders that people are paying attention and care. “We will also continue to monitor,” Sullivan said.
