Donald Trump will be convicted of 34 crimes before his inauguration
President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 criminal convictions Friday, Jan. 10, just a week and a half before he is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.
In a highly anticipated ruling Friday, January 3, Judge Juan Merchan of New York denied Trump's motion to overturn the historic guilty verdict, ordering that the president-elect appear for sentencing, either virtually or in person , Friday January 10. at 9:30 a.m. local time.
Although the charges against Trump could carry up to four years in prison, Merchan made clear in his ruling that he did not intend to sentence the politician to prison.
Instead, the judge suggested, “an unconditional release appears to be the most viable option to ensure finality and allow the defendant to pursue his appeal options.”

Trump's legal team has repeatedly tried to get the president's case dismissed since his first conviction on May 30.
One of the defense's strongest arguments, that the Supreme Court's July ruling on presidential immunity was grounds for overturning the verdict, had already been rejected by Merchan in December.
In his final decision upholding the verdict, the judge stressed the importance of respecting the trial process.
“The significance of the fact that the verdict was returned by a unanimous jury of 12 peers of the accused, after the trial, cannot in any way be overstated,” he wrote. “Indeed, the sanctity of the jury verdict and the deference that should be accorded it constitutes a fundamental principle in our nation’s jurisprudence.”

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has filed an unprecedented action against Trump aimed at proving that he not only falsified financial documents “with the intent to defraud” in this case, but also to hide a secret $130 payment. $000 paid to Stormy Daniels in the final days of his 2016 presidential election but that he did so in order to cover up a second crime, which elevates the charges from misdemeanors to felonies.
By falsifying the records, the prosecutor's office argued, Trump was more broadly trying to bury evidence of an illegal plot to influence the 2016 election.
Prosecutors provided jurors with strong evidence of falsified business records, but it was harder to prove they could be traced to Trump and charged with crimes, relying largely on testimony to shed light on involvement and the intentions of the former president.
The defense argued that prosecutors' main witness, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, could not be trusted to tell the truth, attempting to sow doubt in jurors' minds.

Colloquially called Trump's “secret” trial, given that adult film star Stormy Daniels' secret payment anchored the narrative, the Manhattan case went well beyond white-collar crime. It was the first of four criminal cases brought against the former president in 2023, three of which involved themes of election interference.
Using solid evidence and exhaustive testimony, Manhattan prosecutors have profiled a former reality TV star who illegally swung the 2016 presidential election in his favor by conspiring with powerful friends to suppress voter information.
The jurors' guilty verdict showed that beyond a reasonable doubt, the evidence presented to them supported the prosecution's story.
