PM Modi set to inaugurate state's first airport in Hisar
Haryana's first airport at Hisar is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February-March. Sources said the Saini government wanted the airport to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister this financial year as the airport infrastructure, including the 3,000-metre runway, required for the start of domestic flights, was “almost completed.”
Chief Secretary Vivek Joshi will visit Hisar on January 5 to take stock of the progress at the airport. His office is coordinating with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) for Modis' visit. A possible date for the inauguration and the availability of prime ministers will be decided after the review meeting, sources said.
Work on the airport, renamed Maharaja Agrasen Airport, began in 2014 when the BJP first formed the government in Haryana. The first phase of work was completed a few years ago.
However, the work gained momentum in 2020, when former CM Manohar Lal Khattar, now a Union minister, performed the 'bhoomi pujan' for the construction of the track. Besides the runway, a terminal and all related facilities for cargo and aviation ecosystem maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities and the 4,200-acre integrated aviation center are nearing completion.
The government has already signed a memorandum of understanding with Alliance Air for operations, and soon flights to various destinations will begin, including Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ayodhya, J&K and Ahmedabad.
This development will not only benefit the local residents but also the people of Punjab, Rajasthan and other states. This improved connectivity is expected to be a significant milestone in the development of Hisar and will contribute significantly to the state's economy, officials said.
