Cartoonist leaves Washington Post after rejecting sketch mocking owner Trump

Award-winning political cartoonist for The Washington Post announced his resignation after a cartoon showing the newspaper's billionaire owner groveling over the rejection of Donald Trump.

Anne Telnaes published on Substack Friday evening (US time) that it was the first time she “had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at.”

The cartoon – which she included in her message – depicts the founder of Amazon and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos, along with Facebook and Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and other media and tech moguls, kneeling and brandishing bags of money in front of a hulking Trump.

We also see a prostrate Mickey Mouse, symbol of the Disney company, owner of ABC News. The TV network recently reached a $15 million settlement with Trump after Trump sued him for defamation for covering his sexual abuse trial in New York.

Telnaes wrote that although his previous sketches had been rejected, this was the first time this had happened because of his “point of view”.

“This is a game changer…and dangerous for a free press,” she said.

The Washington Postwhose slogan is “democracy dies in darkness,” did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

US media quoted editor David Shipley as saying that Telnaes' work was rejected solely because of its “repetition”.

“We had just published a column on the same subject as the cartoon and had already scheduled the publication of another column – this one being a satire –,” he said.

US media aggressively covered Trump's chaotic first term, which included two impeachments and ended with his refusal to acknowledge his defeat in the 2020 election – culminating with a mob of his supporters storming Congress.

As Trump prepares for his inauguration on January 20, after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in November, there are signs that top CEOs, including in the media, are eager to build good relationships.

A stream of high-ranking tycoons, from Apple CEO Tim Cook to Bezos and Zuckerberg, traveled to meet with Trump at his Florida estate.

Elon Musk, owner of the influential social media platform X and the world's richest person, is one of the president-elect's closest advisors.

Amazon and Meta both announced $1 million in donations to Trump's inauguration fund, as did Apple's Cook in his personal capacity.
