Trump on flags at half-mast during inauguration

Donald Trump said Friday that “no American can be happy” about flags being flown at half-mast at his inauguration this month, saying Democrats were excited about the pessimistic outlook. President Joe Biden ordered American flags to be lowered for the usual 30 days on federal buildings and grounds in honor of the late President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100 and will be buried at state funeral next week.

For Trump, it means a shocking image of a nation in mourning on January 20 as he stands on the steps of the Capitol to take the oath of office, before returning to the White House in a remarkable return after his tumultuous first term.

The Republican took to his Truth Social platform to post an angry comment about the situation.

“No one wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it,” Trump wrote.

He made a baseless accusation that Democrats “are all 'giddy' about our beautiful American flag potentially being flown at half-mast during my inauguration.

“They don’t love our country, they only think about themselves,” Trump wrote, still without naming his targets.

Trump appeared to hint at the possibility of flags being re-arranged for his big day, saying half-masting “could” happen and ending with “let's see how it goes.”

But the White House has put an end to all speculation.

Asked if Biden's flag order could be rescinded or reconsidered, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre replied: “No.”
