Sam calls for accelerating development of Hengqin cooperation zone

Macau Chief Executive Sam Hou-fai called for concerted efforts to advance reforms and bold and innovative policy measures for the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

Sam made the remarks during a meeting in Hengqin with the Administrative Committee of Cooperation Areas and its executive committee, during a recent inspection tour on Friday, according to a statement from the Macao Special Administrative Region government.

Sam cited President Xi Jinping's important speech at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration ceremony of the sixth term of the Macao SAR government.

President Xi's speech outlined four expectations for the new MRAS government. The first point President Xi made was to strive to promote appropriate economic diversification, Sam said.

It included efforts to promote high-level coordination and deep alignment of rules between the cooperation zone and Macao and target key areas, promote the development of large-scale distinctive industries, and create a series of historic and impactful projects and programs.

Sam said the central government's decision to develop Hengqin was aimed at promoting Macau's economic diversification and facilitating the improvement of Macau residents' livelihoods.

He requested that the cooperation zone team further accelerate construction work, selecting key industries to establish pilot projects, on the basis of ensuring national sovereignty, security and interests of development, and in accordance with the fundamental and constitutional principles of the country.

Sam stressed the need to strengthen the training of civil servants so that they have a thorough understanding of the regulations of Macau and the cooperation zone.

During his inspection tour, Sam visited the Music on the River TM exhibition hall and the Macau New Neighborhood project.

He also visited the Guangdong-Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Cooperation Industrial Park.
