We were not informed of delay in verdict in £190m case: Imran's lawyer – Pakistan

Amid rumors that the verdict in the Al-Qadir Trust case would be postponed, one of the lawyers representing PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, said on Sunday that there was no had no confirmation that the verdict had been postponed.

On December 23, the date initially scheduled for the announcement of the verdict, the Accountability Court in Islamabad postponed its verdict in the case to January 6 due to the winter holidays.

Justice Nasir Javed Rana said: “The verdict will not be announced today; [winter] the holidays are coming and there is also a course at the high court. Officially, the court took a winter break from December 24 to January 1.

Imran and Bushra were charged in the case on February 27, shortly after the general elections.

The case alleges that Imran and Bushra obtained billions of rupees and land worth hundreds of kanals from Bahria Town Ltd to legalize 50 billion rupees which were identified and returned to the country by the UK under the precedent PTI government.

Dawn.com contacted lawyer Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry, who said the court had not informed the PTI founders' legal team about the postponement. Court staff would not confirm whether the verdict had been delayed, it said.

In a video statement seen by Dawn.com, Chaudhry responded to rumors circulating on social media that the date of the verdict had changed, with other users saying it would be announced in 10 to 12 days.

Social media and TV channels claim the verdict has been postponed, he said. I would like to say that we have not yet received any information on this matter.

Our legal team has not been informed whether we have to go to Adiala prison or G-11 court complex for the verdict hearing, Chaudhry said. Since this morning, I have been trying to contact court staff to find out where the hearing will take place, but we have not received any official information.

Chaudhry said the failure of the defense to be informed of where the hearing would take place poses a major question mark for the judiciary.
