The Guardian's take on cinema and feminism in China: women think its story is their story | Editorial
J.Just over a year ago, Xi Jinping told the National Women's Congress of China that the Communist Party should actively promote a new type of marriage and childbearing culture. Over the past two years, there has not been a single woman in the 24-member politburo (no woman has ever reached its standing committee, China's highest political body). Activism on women's issues, as in other areas, has been relegated underground.
Yet while the political environment is bleak, the unexpected success of a low-budget comedy speaks volumes about how feminism has become mainstream in China. This winter's surprise hit was Her Story, the story of an unexpected friendship between a do-it-all single mother and an artistic and sentimental neighbor, who tops the Chinese box office.
Some have compared it to the Hollywood film Barbie: although less lavish, both use comedy to frame feminist criticism. But Her Story doesn't pull its weight. It tackles issues like pornography, consent, menstruation and single motherhood. We see acts of kindness between strangers, while the male characters are largely desperate and determined to prove their manhood. Even the strong-willed preteen girl must struggle with toxic masculinity at school. In one excruciating scene, an ex-husband attempts to flaunt his superior feminist knowledge to outdo his rival: Have you read Chizuko Ueno? he asks.
This sentence is greeted with laughter from the viewers. Ueno, a Japanese feminist, became a bestseller in China with books such as Misogyny and Feminism from Scratch. Its popularity reflects a renewed interest in feminist ideas, also visible in a growing number of podcasts. But entertainment offers a convenient marriage: it's easier to address sensitive issues when wrapped in drama and more appetizing to the unconverted, while production companies realize that financially independent young women constitute a lucrative market. Other recent hits include Yolo, about a lonely woman who reinvents herself as a boxer, and Like a Rolling Stoneinspired by the true story of a middle-aged woman who leaves her unhappy marriage behind to embark on an epic road trip.
In the early 2010s, Chinese feminists challenged everything from domestic violence to unfair college admissions procedures and lack of infrastructure for women, with eye-catching and often funny stunts like Occupy the Toilet for men. The remarkable move, later captured in Leta Hong Fincher's book Betraying Big Brotherdid not last long: in 2015, a dramatic crackdown resulted in the arrest of five feminists who planned to demonstrate against sexual harassment on public transport. In 2018, a second wave of activism inspired by the #MeToo movement briefly flourished on campuses and elsewhere, but courts and censors were unsympathetic, and one of its key figures was jailed for five years this summer .
However, the demands still resonate and the ideas sown by these movements have since flourished. Ten years ago, many women concluded that they had no choice but to get married, even if they weren't enthusiastic about it. Today, birth and marriage rates are falling in part because they are coming to the conclusion that they prefer to go their own way, despite intense family pressure and increasing political pressure. Her story, and the way it was embraced by female viewers, speaks volumes about Chinese women's desire to get a better deal. Now that it has been unleashed, that appetite will no longer be curbed.
