Indonesia launches free meals program to combat stunting

Indonesia launched an ambitious $4.3 billion free meals program on Monday to combat stunting due to malnutrition, a key election promise of President Prabowo Subianto.
Prabowo pledged to provide free nutritious meals to tens of millions of schoolchildren and pregnant women, saying it would improve their quality of life and boost economic growth.
“This is historic for Indonesia, which for the first time is carrying out a national nutrition program for toddlers, students, pregnant and lactating mothers,” presidential spokesperson Hasan Nasbi said on Sunday evening.
At least 190 kitchens run by third-party catering services opened across the country, including some run by military bases, and were busy as early as midnight preparing meals before distributing them to schoolchildren and pregnant women.
The government has allocated 10,000 rupees (62 US cents) per meal to kitchens that prepare rice, proteins, vegetables and fruits for students.
The program has a budget of 71 trillion rupiah ($4.3 billion) for fiscal 2025 and is expected to provide meals to nearly 83 million people by 2029.
The free meals program is designed to combat stunting, which affects 21.5 percent of children in the archipelago of some 282 million people.
This Southeast Asian country aims to reduce this rate to 5% by 2045.
Prabowo has championed the agenda since last year's presidential campaign, and his team has said the Southeast Asian archipelago's poorest and most isolated regions would be prioritized.
He visited several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, after being sworn in last October, to seek financial support.
He reached a $10 billion deal with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November for support in several sectors, including the free meals program.
However, analysts believe that this project is not viable in the long term.
“I'm quite pessimistic if everything is assumed by the central government. Economically, it's not sustainable,” Aditya Alta, a public policy analyst at the Center for Indonesian Policy Studies think tank, told AFP.
“Stunting is a multidimensional problem and it is not enough to solve it with a single approach,” he said.
