Imran's conviction 'won't derail negotiations'

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa minister Shaukat Yousafzai has said that the conviction of Imran Khan by the courts will not affect the ongoing negotiations.

In a press release, Yousafzai said the PTI had no objection to submitting its demands in writing to the government negotiating committee.

“Well, our demands are clear: release all detained workers and create a judicial commission. I don't think it is necessary to submit this in writing,” he said.

He added that the delay was because the PTI negotiating committee was not allowed to meet Imran Khan.

No demands can be made to the government until the PTI negotiating committee meets the party founder.

The government committee can meet its leaders for consultations at any time, but the PTI negotiating committee was not allowed to meet its leader in jail, he lamented, adding that the government should facilitate the negotiations rapid PTI.

Yousafzai stressed that the £190m case was an acquittal case and he did not know what kind of drama the government was going to stage.

“Even if there was a conviction in this case, it would be overturned by the High Court,” he said confidently.

Yousafzai claimed that the PTI founder did not want to reach an agreement through negotiations and therefore Imran's conviction would not affect the negotiations.

He said the decision to continue negotiations depends on the seriousness of the government. The talks will not result in any agreement, which is why a civil disobedience movement is also underway, he argued.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Irfan Siddiqui said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has introduced new demands in the ongoing political negotiations, raising concerns over the the future of talks aimed at resolving the country's political tensions.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, he warned that the PTI's change in stance, which now includes releasing Imran Khan through a decree and involving “real decision-makers” in the talks, could undermine the progress made during the previous negotiations.

The coalition government and the PTI had initially reached consensus on two main demands during the first round of negotiations on December 23, 2024: the release of political prisoners and a judicial investigation into the events of May 9 and November 26. These conditions have drawn criticism from government officials.

Siddiqui noted that despite assurances given in previous discussions, the PTI is yet to formally submit a list of demands. He highlighted recent comments by senior PTI leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, who revealed the party's desire to include “stakeholders with real decision-making power” in the dialogue process.

The PML-N leader expressed concern that this demand was not raised in previous rounds of negotiations, suggesting a lack of alignment within the PTI leadership.
