The Pakistan Tehreek-Insaf (PTI) has demanded “unrestricted access” to jailed party founder Imran Khan to pursue serious negotiations with the government.

Addressing a joint press conference in the presence of PTI General Secretary Salman Akram Raja and President Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub said: “During the second round of negotiations, our negotiating team had requested the government team to hold an unmonitored and unhindered meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan.

After months of political tug-of-war, the coalition government and the embattled PTI finally reached a negotiating table last month to defuse tensions, with the Khan-founded party initially putting forward two initial demands: the release of all prisoners policies and legal procedure. investigation into the events of May 9 and November 26.

During the two rounds of talks with National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, the PTI negotiating team sought frequent meetings with the party founder to finalize the 'charter of demands'.

Currently, the ongoing negotiation process is at an impasse as PTI leaders have been denied permission to meet the PTI founder by the authorities concerned.

During the second round of talks, the ruling coalition assured the PTI that it was allowed to meet Khan, Ayub said.

The 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been behind bars since August last year after being convicted in the Toshakhana case, one of dozens of cases registered against the former prime minister since his ouster from power in April 2022.

For his part, PTI Chairman Gohar said the case against the government was very long, adding that his party was excluded from the elections and its victory was turned into defeat through election rigging.

Stressing the need for uninterrupted negotiations between the government and the opposition to defuse political tensions in the country, he said negotiations should not be hampered by trivial matters such as presentation of written demands.

The PTI leader said he had started negotiations with the government to bridge the gap between the people and the state.

Responding to a question on the deal, he said, quoting Khan, that the PTI founder would be the last to be released from jail.
