PTI demands 'unhindered' access to Imran, without 'surveillance' – Pakistan

The PTI on Tuesday demanded that the government allow unhindered access to party founder Imran Khan for meetings without any surveillance, as part of ongoing talks aimed at lowering the political temperature.

Since Imran's incarceration in several cases last year, the PTI's relations with the government and the establishment have deteriorated sharply, marked by protests that often degenerated into violence amid state repression.

Following the unrest, Imran set up a five-member committee to hold talks with anyone, signaling a change in stance of PTI lawmakers in parliament. In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also formed a committee comprising members of the ruling coalition.

The first meeting between the two sides took place on December 23, while the second took place on January 2. So far, both sides have not made significant progress as PTI leaders sought to meet Imran frequently to finalize their list of demands. The government and opposition will meet again, perhaps this week.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today along with other party leaders, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the party was still to receive any information about a planned meeting with Imran .

He added that negotiations should not be delayed in this way.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, said: “We requested in our last meeting with the government to allow us to meet Imran Khan in an unguarded and unhindered manner, without surveillance intelligence agencies.

He said the current conditions of the Adiala jail room where the meetings with Imran took place were not conducive to free and open talks.

The seriousness of the government regarding the negotiations will be demonstrated by allowing our meeting in an unrestricted environment by giving unhindered access to Imran as we will take our instructions from there.

Intelligence agencies are intervening in the legal process against bail of our leaders and workers, from Islamabad High Court to sessions courts or anti-terrorism courts, it is a factual position, Ayub added.

He reiterated the PTI's demands for the release of undertrial political prisoners and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9, 2023 and November 26.

The PTI leader concluded that the only solution to the country's problems was free and fair elections and reiterated his demand for unhindered access to Imran.

Lawyer Gohar said the party's call for civil disobedience and curbing remittances from overseas Pakistanis was still intact.

The dialogue between the two parties has so far not seen any significant progress. The main obstacles include PTI negotiators' lack of access to Imran and the PTI's reluctance to share its demands in writing with the government.

Awaiting a meeting with Imran to finalize its demands, the PTI accused the federal government of not being serious in negotiations with the opposition party, saying statements by some ministers could dampen the dialogue process.
