Age UK Gloucestershire employee jailed for stealing $460,000 from charity
A former finance director who worked for Age UK has been jailed after admitting stealing almost $460,000 from the charity.
Rachel Limbrick, 57, who worked at Age UK Gloucestershire, pleaded guilty to abuse of office fraud in November.
She was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison at Gloucester Crown Court on Tuesday.
Judge Rupert Lowe told Limbrick: “You deprived the elderly people of Gloucestershire so you could have a nice holiday. »
The court was told the fraud took place between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2023, while Limbrick was working for the Gloucestershire branch of Age UK.
She was confronted with missing funds on July 12, 2023 and immediately admitted she had taken 458,697 of them, the court was told.
Limbrick repaid 470,000, to cover the money taken, plus an additional amount to cover the costs of the investigation, following a civil settlement.
Age UK Gloucestershire said: “We provide direct support to more than 10,000 older people.
“They feel like they have been betrayed. The impact on employees is psychological.
“They have to deal with a loss of confidence on a daily basis.”
Ellen McAnaw, defending Limbrick, told the court her client had “always struggled financially” and suffered “physical and mental abuse” from a partner during the fraud.
She added: “The first time she stole money she felt physically ill, then she did it again and again and it became an addiction due to lack of supervision from of the charity.
“She spent it on the family, took them on vacations and gave them things she wasn’t able to acquire growing up.”
Judge Lowe told Limbrick she had committed a “very large fraud, on a very vulnerable organisation”.
However, the judge added that it was “highly unusual” for a person to immediately admit to their crimes.
“You will serve half of that sentence before you are released, you may serve a little less,” Judge Lowe added.
