Former Conservative Party chairman Sir Jake Berry has criticized Labour's stance on public inquiries, questioning why the party called for an inquiry into Boris Johnson's Downing Street wallpaper but opposed it on grooming gangs.
Speaking to GB News, Berry condemned what he called Labour's inconsistent approach to demanding public inquiries.
He noted that the scale of grooming gangs turned out to be much more widespread than initially thought, affecting 50 cities instead of the six initially identified.
The former president drew attention to Labor's 2020 call for an investigation into Boris Johnson's wallpaper choices in Downing Street.

Berry told GB News: “They love public inquiries, but apparently not in this case. And you wonder why?
“Not recently, in 2020, a shadow minister called for a full investigation into the wallpaper that the then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, had hung in his apartment at Number 10 Downing Street.”
He pointed out that Rachel Reeves, whom he nicknamed “Rachel of Accounts”, had also called for a full public inquiry into car loan interest rates in 2017.
He suggested Labour's reluctance stemmed from Keir Starmer's time as director of public prosecutions, saying Starmer “has a huge case of amnesia again from his time as prosecutor”.

Berry was furious: “He claims all the time that I was director of public prosecutions, I'm tough. I'm tough on criminals.

“But every time one of these serious cases comes up, apparently it has nothing to do with him.”
He recalled confrontations in the House of Commons where Starmer challenged Boris Johnson over COVID-19, saying “the buck stops with you”.
“The onus is on you, Prime Minister, as the leader of the DPP and as the Prime Minister. Go ahead and do it,” Berry said.
The former Conservative president also referred to the Jimmy Savile case, pointing out that Starmer had “formally apologized on behalf of his department as Director of Public Prosecutions”.

Berry concluded: “Keir Starmer is once again suffering from a massive case of amnesia from his time as prosecutor.
“He doesn't really know why he wasn't directly involved in this matter, just as apparently he wasn't directly involved in the Jimmy Savile affair.”
He added: “On the Jimmy Savile point, he has officially apologized on behalf of his department as Director of Public Prosecutions. You can't have it both ways.
“Oldham Council has gone to the government and asked for this public inquiry. Why is the government refusing?”
