Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday there was no place for “terrorist organizations” in Syria under new Islamist leaders, in a warning against Kurdish forces there.
The fall of Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad last month raised the prospect of direct Turkish intervention in the country against Kurdish forces accused by Ankara of having links to armed separatists.
Erdogan's comment came during a meeting in Ankara with the Prime Minister of Iraq's Kurdish region, Masrour Barzani, the Turkish leader's office said in a statement.
Erdogan told Barzani that Turkey was working to prevent Assad's overthrow from causing further instability in the region.
There is no place for “terrorist organizations or their affiliated elements in the future of the new Syria,” Erdogan said.
Ankara accuses one of the main Kurdish forces in Syria, the People's Protection Units (YPG), of links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), banned in Turkey.
The PKK has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state and is banned as a terrorist organization by Ankara and its Western allies.
In a televised speech Tuesday evening, Erdogan again warned that “there is no place for any form of terrorism” in Turkey and beyond.
“We have begun to reap the benefits of our strategy to eliminate terrorism at its source, which we have been implementing for some time, both domestically and internationally,” he said.
“Now we are pursuing this with new tools and new methods,” the Turkish leader said without elaborating.
The Turkish army regularly launches strikes against Kurdish fighters in Syria and neighboring Iraq, accusing them of having links with the PKK.
Erdogan also said that what he described as the “Syrian revolution” had opened a “historic window of opportunity” for Turkey and the region.
On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said: “The elimination of the PKK/YPG is only a matter of time.”
He cited a call from Syria's new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose HTS group has long had ties to Turkey, for Kurdish-led forces to be integrated into the Syrian national army.
The United States supported the YPG in their fight against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist movement, largely crushed in its former Syrian stronghold.
But Fidan warned that Western countries should not use the IS threat as a “pretext to strengthen the PKK”.
