PTI leaders demand unrestricted access to Imran Khan ahead of govt talks

Islamabad, Jan 7 (PTI) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders on Tuesday demanded unrestricted access to jailed former prime minister and party founder Imran Khan as a precondition for initiating the next round of talks with the government.

The government and PTI teams have held two rounds of talks so far and the third is expected to take place this week to address political differences to stabilize the political situation in the country.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, its Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, party general secretary Salman Akram Raja and senior leader Shibli Faraz jointly addressed a press conference.

Gohar said a third meeting would only take place once the Khan was allowed to meet them. He clarified that the negotiations were not aimed at reaching an agreement but were aimed at the people, insisting that no delay should occur in the negotiation plan.

He said the PTI had opened the door for dialogue after a long time but more than 200 complaints had been filed against the party leadership. He also spoke about the violence faced by PTI workers, many of whom are still missing.

Gohar said the party had started negotiations based on two demands, including the release of all prisoners and the commission of inquiry into the events of May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024.

Omar Ayub also insisted on a meeting with Khan, pointing out that there had been no response from the government. He expressed dissatisfaction with the government's failure to facilitate a meeting without conditions.

We requested in our last meeting with the government to allow us to meet Imran Khan in an unsupervised and unhindered manner, without surveillance from intelligence agencies, he said, adding the current conditions of the room Adiala prison where meetings with Khan were not conducive to free and open talks. The seriousness of the government regarding the negotiations will be visible by allowing our meeting in an unrestricted environment by giving unhindered access to Imran as we will take our instructions from there, he said.

Salman Akram Raja said Khan had pledged to be the last person to ask for his release from prison and wanted freedom for all prisoners. He said the party could not simply ignore the bloodshed and would seek justice.

He reiterated that the PTI was part of the negotiation process aimed at leading the state towards welfare, but noted a lack of similar intentions from the other side.

Following the 2024 political unrest, Khan authorized his party to hold talks with the government, and in response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also formed a committee comprising members of the ruling coalition.

The first meeting between the two sides took place on December 23, while the second took place on January 2.

So far, both sides have not made significant progress as PTI leaders sought to meet Khan frequently to finalize their list of demands.
