Daughter shares government letter approving memorial for Pranab Mukherjee, thanks PM Modi
New Delhi, Jan 7: Pranab Mukherjee's daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee on Tuesday took to social media platform deceased former president.
The letter issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said that a designated site has been earmarked for the erection of a memorial in the name of the former president, at the Rajghat premises.
Sharmistha, also a former Congress leader, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the decision and said she was immensely touched by his gracious gesture.
She spoke to memorial for Baba (father). It's more precious considering we did it. Immensely touched by this unexpected but truly gracious gesture of PM.
She also recalled her father's principles while expressing her joy at the move.
“Baba used to say that state honors should not be asked for, they should be offered. I am very grateful that Prime Minister Modi has done this to honor Baba's memory. This does not affect Baba where he is now – beyond applause or criticism But for his daughter, words are not enough to express my joy, she wrote.
A few days ago, when the Congress demanded a memorial for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sharmistha went public with her displeasure with the grand old party, saying it did not represent her father and did not grant him not the respect he deserved.
She noted that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) did not even convene a formal meeting to pass a condolence resolution, despite Mukherjee's decades of service to the party.
The former president died on August 31, 2020, at the age of 84.
