Since it was created by Boris Johnson because of the Covid pandemic, Downing Street's media briefing room has glowed a rich blue.

But journalists returned yesterday after Parliament's Christmas recess and found the room a little different.

Gone is the large backdrop with a subtle nod to the UK coat of arms and navy blue carpet. In its place, more wood paneling and a carpet with a sober gray pattern.

The renovation work over the festive period is said to have cost around 80,000 euros.

Sir Keir Starmers' official spokesman said today that the one-off refresh had taken place to return the hall to a politically neutral setting.

He pointed out that it had now returned to its original state, adding: You know the cost was obviously only a fraction of what the previous administration spent on the hall.

It would have been difficult to match these expenses. Boris Johnson's government paid $2.6 million to create the space at Number 9 Downing Street, with Labor labeling it a vanity project at the time.

The exact amount spent on the latest overhaul will be revealed when the Cabinet Office publishes its annual accounts.

Asked if there was really a need to make the Blue Room politically neutral, the Prime Minister's spokesperson said the government had cut 80 million each year from communications and campaign budgets.

He added that Sir Keir would now use the hall for press conferences, something he had not done since winning last year's election.
