Tensions rise as govt-PTI talks reach deadlock over Imran Khan detention
Negotiations between the Pakistani government and opposition parties, notably the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have faced significant obstacles. Allegations of government interference and restrictions on PTI's access to its jailed leader Imran Khan have complicated the discussions, according to a Dawn report. Aleema Khan, sister of PTI founding member Imran Khan, revealed that the former prime minister was offered a deal to leave Adiala jail in Rawalpindi and be placed under house arrest at his Banigala residence.
On Tuesday, Aleema Khan said several offers had been conveyed to her brother through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. These proposals reportedly suggested that Imran Khan remain silent in exchange for house arrest. However, she questioned the viability of such a proposal after her brother's long imprisonment. Despite government and PTI denials of formal offers for Imran Khan's transfer, Aleema's claims added to the tense atmosphere of the negotiations.
PTI negotiators continue to demand “unsupervised access” to their leader as negotiations with the government continue. When negotiations resumed in late December, PTI representatives met Imran Khan on Tuesday but were unhappy with the conditions, mainly due to alleged surveillance of the meeting room. PTI leader Omar Ayub stressed that their request for unrestricted access had been rejected by government officials. Ayub alleged that the spy equipment hampered an open dialogue with Khan. Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, acting president of the PTI, emphasized resolving tensions and urged the government to avoid controversy over the lack of written demands from the opposition.
The PTI has already outlined its main demands: free political prisoners and form a judicial commission to investigate past violence. Lawyer Salman Akram Raja said he was concerned about the government's refusal to allow unfettered access to Khan, seeing it as a sign of suspicious motives. Simultaneously, Imran Khan initiated legal challenges to what he called inhumane detention conditions. The former prime minister filed a petition with the special judge at the central court in Islamabad, claiming that prison officials had denied basic rights, citing restrictions on family contact, medical care and access to media.
Imran Khan's legal representatives argued that he was isolated, which hampered his political engagement and determination. The petition called for allowing telephone communications with one's children, medical visits and access to the media under the prison provisions. In a related legal matter, the Islamabad Additional Sessions Court recently adjourned the pre-arrest bail applications of Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to January 28. The cases relate to charges related to the protests in the federal capital. The court granted Bushra Bibi an exemption from in-person hearings and will consider bail applications, including Khan's, in the next session, Dawn reported.
The court also demanded Khan's video presence for the next hearing. While political negotiations and legal proceedings are ongoing, the resolution remains uncertain, adding to the complexity of Pakistan's volatile political landscape.
