Chinese hackers attack Philippine presidential office

The Philippines has confirmed that no data was stolen following a recorded cyberattack on the president's office by a Chinese state-sponsored actor.

The country's Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said the attack focused on recasting old information to reiterate the hackers' capabilities, but assured that no critical intelligence had not been compromised.

At a press conference in Manila, DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy noted that various government agencies have experienced attempts similar to the latest attack and have been successfully mitigated.

The DICT noted that the infiltration against the Manila executive branch is part of the cyber group's broader campaign to steal military documents associated with Beijing's dispute over the South China Sea, a region straddling much of the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines.

The agency explained that although countries' governing bodies are always at risk of cyberattacks, the DICT quickly detected the incident and responded accordingly to protect against the threat.

An update of Reuters said that the Chinese Embassy in Manila made no comment on the incident, while the Chinese Foreign Ministry denied any knowledge of the assault.

The attack followed a discussion between the Philippines and the United States in 2024 to initiate military intelligence sharing practices amid China's growing dominance in the Pacific.

Manila also held a meeting with Beijing the same year to ease tensions in the South China Sea by establishing a direct line of communication between the leaders of the two countries.

The Philippines' cooperation plans with the two largest countries follow a minor standoff between the Philippine and Chinese maritime services just before the end of the year, during which the Chinese coast guard fired a water cannon and slid to the side a Philippine Coast Guard vessel near the disputed Scarborough Reef.
