Maryam Nawaz fires another broadside at Imran Khan

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has fired another broadside at jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, saying what the former prime minister was suffering today was “karma » for his past actions.

“How can a person who uses youth as political fuel fall asleep,” the provincial chief executive said at the Honhaar Scholarship Scheme ceremony in Sargodha.

Urging students not to oppose the country “under any circumstances,” she said someone “who asks you to besiege and burn is not your friend.”

“Her [Imran] my own children were sitting outside [and] he is asking others to vandalize and sow anarchy,” Maryam said, referring to the events of May 9, 2023 and the “last call protest” of November 26.

Khan, who remains behind bars in Adiala jail, and several other PTI members face various allegations in cases related to the violence that followed his arrest on May 9.

The vandalism was followed by the arrest of the PTI founder on the aforementioned date in 2023, during which party activists protested, taking to the streets across the country and damaging public and private property, including military installations.

The riots also resulted in the deaths of at least eight people and injured several others, prompting authorities to arrest thousands of PTI workers and supporters.

During today's event, the Punjab CM regretted that these children, misled by the PTI founder's statements, are in jail. “All of these events are the result of one individual’s lust for power,” she added.

Referring to the conviction handed down by the military court against Hassan Niazi, Maryam regretted that the nephew of the PTI founder “made fun of the military uniform and brought shame to the country”. “He [Niazi] was imprisoned for ten years…his future was destroyed,” she added.

Last month, military courts convicted 60 other “culprits”, including Hassan Niazi, for their involvement in the May 9 riots, bringing the total number convicted to 85.

The global community, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU), has expressed concerns over the sentencing of civilians by military courts, saying such sentences are contrary to international law.

Criticizing the ousted prime minister for facing 'karma', Maryam said she was arrested during the PTI tenure in front of her father Nawaz Sharif. “I was in Adiala prison when I learned of my mother’s death.”

Noting that the country's paths to development were opening, she said she would not be able to launch a scholarship program if its priority was “to turn off someone's air conditioner or heater.”
