The PTI spokesperson recalled how the gates of Adiala jail were opened to a PTI leader, Azam Swati, at 7 a.m. simply because the government wanted to ask Imran Khan to delay a planned political rally in the capital.

He added that the government and the opposition were currently at a critical juncture in history, but all his party could see was the inability to hold a meeting with the PTI supreme leader.

He, however, categorically stated that the PTI would not back down from the talks process, adding that the negotiating committee would look into what the government is saying, in practical terms, during the third round of talks.

A member of the PTI legal team, lawyer Faisal Chaudhry, told The Express Tribune that Tuesday was reserved for meetings with family members and lawyers, while Thursday was reserved for meetings with friends.

As per the schedule, Chaudhry said Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Qasim Khan Niazi met Imran on Tuesday, but the meeting with the lawyers was postponed as the PTI founder sought to meet the negotiating committee.

Chaudhry added that yesterday evening, Adiala Prison authorities were contacted on the instructions of NA opposition leader Omar Ayub. “It was agreed with the prison authorities that they would provide information once permission was granted for a meeting with the negotiating committee.”

However, he said, the PTI negotiating committee was not allowed to meet Khan despite waiting all day.

“This raises important questions about whether the government negotiating team has the authority to implement a substantive decision, given its acknowledged failure to arrange a PTI team meeting with Khan Sahib,” said Chaudhry.

He also pointed out that party leaders were allowed only one meeting with Imran – on December 26, 2024 – in the last three months.

“It appears that an unannounced ban on Imran Khan's meetings with his party leaders has been imposed,” he said.

Access to Imran Khan has become a sticking point in negotiations between the two sides and the dialogue appears to be at an impasse.

The tracking process began on December 23, with the aim of defusing tensions and mending fences. It was followed by a second meeting on January 2, 2025, but nothing concrete materialized.

During the last two rounds of negotiations, the government has emphasized that the PTI should present its demands in writing before moving forward. On the other hand, the PTI said the charter of demands cannot be finalized without meeting Imran Khan.

Since the start of negotiations, both sides have pointed fingers at each other for delays, and things have since moved at a snail's pace.

The third round of negotiations was expected this week, but no date could be set.
